Now building FileFreak.io

Sean Brill, Senior software engineerFrom first commit to live domain.

I design, build and run whole products, from the database to the pipeline that deploys them. By day I'm a senior software engineer at Prudential. The rest of the time I build FileFreak, the platform this site is served from, and the tools around it.

How this site ships

Shipped on my own stack.

This site is built, stored and served by software I wrote. Here is the path from my editor to your screen.

  1. git push

A push to main on GitHub. That is the whole release process.

  2. EZPIPELINE

My CI/CD server is watching the branch. It lints and typechecks the code, checks the colour contrast of both themes, then builds the site.

  3. FileFreak SDK

The build asks FileFreak which photos each folder holds. All 18 photos on this site live in FileFreak storage, one folder per project, with 512, 1024 and 2048 pixel copies made by FileFreak.

  4. FileFreak Sites

The pages deploy to FileFreak's edge. Only files that changed are uploaded, and any of the last ten deploys is one command away from a rollback.

  5. Your browser

Each visit checks the photo folders again, so a swapped photo shows without a rebuild. FileFreak counts the visit with analytics it adds at the edge.

About

Hi, I'm Sean.

I'm a senior software engineer at Prudential, where I led the move of parts of the Prudential Express portal to a micro-frontend architecture. Before that I spent three years at Seisan Consulting, going from intern to technical lead on client apps across the web, mobile, games, and AR and VR.

On my own time I build products end to end. FileFreak started as a cloud drive in 2024 and grew into a developer platform: storage, static sites, git hosting and package registries under one account. EZPIPELINE, the CI/CD server I wrote to ship it, now ships my other products too, notch.fm and knitted.studio among them.

I like owning the whole thing: the design, the code on every layer, the infrastructure, and keeping it running once it ships. I studied Information Sciences and Technology at Penn State, and I live in Morristown, New Jersey.

Experience

Where I've worked.

Five years of shipping software: for clients at a consultancy, at Prudential, and for my own company.

  1. FileFreak

    1. Founder

      – now

      • Design, build and run FileFreak.io end to end: the platform and its API, the web app, a Rust CLI, a Tauri desktop client, a TypeScript SDK and a Cloudflare edge for static sites.
      • Run it in production on Azure and Cloudflare, shipped by EZPIPELINE, my own CI/CD server.
  2. Prudential Financial

    Newark, NJ

    1. Senior Software Engineer

      – now

      • Led the move of key sections of the Prudential Express web portal to a micro-frontend architecture, recognized with the internal “Building the Future” award.
      • Designed and built a secure internal portal with React and TypeScript, a Node.js backend, the Apigee API gateway and Microsoft Entra sign-in.
      • Led refactoring of legacy codebases and raised engineering standards across the team, mentoring junior developers on design, documentation and troubleshooting.
      • Present technical demos and architecture proposals to engineering leadership and stakeholders.
  3. Seisan Consulting

    Lancaster, PA

    May 2021 – Jun 2024

    1. Software Engineer II

      –

      • Technical lead on a mobile app on the App Store and Google Play with over 6,000 downloads and 300 daily active users.
      • Built and deployed REST APIs on AWS and Azure, one of them serving around 32,000 requests a day.
      • Overhauled a client's .NET applications, backend and front end, and wrote custom Unity Android plugins for native features and Google Sign-In.
    2. Software Engineer

      –

      • Full-stack work across .NET and Node.js web apps, mobile, and games, including AR and VR experiences.
      • Led a WebXR art gallery: a React interface, a Node.js backend on AWS EC2, and a WebGL gallery editor and viewer hosted on S3.
      • Cut app bundle sizes to meet Google Play's limits.
    3. Computer Science Intern

      –

      • Full-stack development across many client tech stacks, presenting project updates directly to clients.
